THE FRUITS OF TRUE REPENTANCE, ECWA DEVOTIONAL
MONDAY, 24 AUGUST
TEXT: JONAH 3:1-10
TOPIC: THE FRUITS OF TRUE REPENTANCE
True repentance must bear fruits. One cannot repent and continue with his old nature of sin. This chapter of Jonah presents the true nature of repentance in two phases thus:
1. Jonah’s repentance in the previous chapters yielded fruits as manifested in chapter three. The first step taken by Jonah was his obedience to God (vs. 3 and vs. 4). Unlike the first time, Jonah instantly obeyed and acted on the second command of the Lord. The second obvious fruit was his tireless walking around the city. He was so eager to go round the city without complaining. And the third was his powerful herald or loud cry as a sign of wholehearted service to the Lord. Fourth, his message was so powerful as to convince the people of Nineveh into repentance.
2. The repentance of the people of Nineveh was also quite impressive and dramatic. They all repented within a short time- both men and women, great and small! Wow, quite surprising. They also turned from all their sins. Therefore, their true repentance drew God’s mercy and the city and its people were saved. True repentance must bear fruits. It changes one from disobedience to obedience and from condemnation to salvation. Therefore, we must learn to repent sincerely whenever we sin against God. The Lord is always ready to forgive whenever we truly repent.
QUESTION: Is there any true fruit of repentance in your life?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to bear the fruit of repentance, in Jesus name, Amen.
